This was supposed to be just a rock fishing trip.
I have been down to Colnett before and we always stop to see if there are any YT biters. So far, my experience has been, that in Jan & Feb there aren't many.
When we stopped at the high spot to look around there were 3 other boats and the word was they had caught a few. I had set up really for rock fishing and had only 25 lb mono on top of my 50 lb spectra. I got bit and broke off. Live and Learn - I will not go out again without a really stout setup for jigging for yellow tail.
From about 7:45 to 10:30 the boat caught 39 yellow tail then the bite seemed to shut off, so we went looking for rock cod.

We got on a couple of spots and everyone was bringing up good quality reds. Some lings and ocean white fish. I did not see them, but I know we made a couple of moves to avoid the Humboldt squids.
By about 3pm we had gotten our limits of rock fish so Capt. Drew decided to head back and see if there were any more YT biters. There were. This is very unusual to get an am and pm bite for YT, I was told - some attributed it to the El Nino -warmer waters.
We caught another 12 in the Pm bite from about 3:30 to 5:30. The YT that I caught was courtesy of one of the other anglers "Mike" who had caught the Jack Pot fish earlier and hooked another YT and handed me his rod to reel it in. Mike had caught about 3 other YT and really wanted me to get the feel of reeling one in. This was an open party trip and everyone were complete strangers, but they were a great group and a lot of fun. I will never forget reeling that fish in and am so thankful to Mike for being so generous.
23 angers 2/13/2010220 cod
10 lings
51 yellow tail
Wow , what a thrill my arm is still sore - I believe my fish was about 20 lbs. At the end of the evening one of the other anglers Rich weighed several of the yellow tail and told me they were from 15lbs to the JP at 27lbs.
I always have a great time on the Apollo, boat &the crew are the best - This time Capt. Drew Card, the weather and the fish came together for a really fantastic winter run down to Colnett.
