Well, we have been dying to get on a Seabass trip for the last month and decided that Father's Day would be a nice time to journey south. We lucked out and grabbed a couple spots on the Options, a 6-Pack out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach. We had never been on this boat, but we had heard lots of awesome things and were excited to give her a test run.
Fishing the day prior was slow, but we had hopes that tomorrow would be a different day. We crossed over to Catalina and anchored up. I fished in the dark for a Horn shark and some skates , no love on the Seabass in the dark. I snoozed for a couple hours and returned to the deck at grey light. We stuck it out untill after 8am for a few Calico and Sargo then decided to make a move and look around. Conditions were tough, not a lot of current, but nice, milky jade green water was the ticket.
Long story short...We found them...Fred was the amazing hot stick of the day landing 5 for 5 on the Seabass he hooked. I hooked 4, but lost 2 of them at the gaff. It's heartbreaking to watch them swim away when the gaff is already out....They just spit the hook. Soft, perch like bites made identifying the right kind tough, but in the end, 18 nice Seabass in the 25lb range died...Limits for the boat and 1 each for the crew to take home. Great group of guys, hope we get to share a rail again soon.Special thanks to Capt's Tino, Wes, and Jeff for a fantastic boat ride, epic fishing, and even better company, we can't wait till next time!!!!
