White Sea Bass are here !!!

Well I had signed up for the Maximus 1pm to 1pm trip a while back and forgot about it. I am glad Keith called me to check in last week. I really did not expect anything the bite has been so scratchy lately. But I though it might be interesting to get to the fishing places after most boat had gone home and fish into the evening and then go at it at grey light again then hit it home.


We headed out of the harbor and stopped to catch some mackerel
to use as bait. We had full live wells of sardine and frozen squid as well.





I was the first one to hook and land one about 11:30 pm Tuesday nite. Then about 6 more were landed and I turned in about 12-12:30. At about 4am I got up and within 20 minutes We started getting bit. All of the sea bass were caught on live mackerel (except one on sardine) on dropper loops or w/egg sinkers.

Mine weighed out to 35 lbs. (the biggest WSB I have ever landed- Woo Hoo!) others were up to about 60lbs. For these I had on 65 lb spectra with a 40Lb mono topshot on a 2 speed reel. I was so excited I never put it into the 2nd gear, I just reeled when I could and maintained pressure, let it run and Keith was a wizard with the gaff.

This was the evening catch - do we look exhausted and happy? I could not hold my fish up any more, but I am wearing my GCLA sweatshirt proudly.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES

We first have to say 'CONGRATULATIONS" to the Ventura County Sportfishing Club for a fabulous day in our first annual Battle of the Sexes fishing competition. We really wanted to bring that beautiful trophy home, but they won it fair and square. We came prepared and were ready to do battle:


They got a jump on us in the beginning, but Ruta and Shirley started landing some big calicos and sandbass. Then it was pretty even the rest of the day. Julie was rocking some big fish as well and Divine was picking them off, one by one. Anneye, Sophia, & I were struggling a little, but we came thru to even the weight. Like I said, it was pretty even till the last drop. But the comaraderie between both teams was the best of all. Jerry, Mr. "half-finger", and I kidded all day about our disabilities. Even Skipper Shawn joined in the fun by saying that Jerry and I were Siamese twins, joined at the finger, and that's where they separated us. It was crazy fun. And then Scott hooked the winning calico bass - not only to win the competition, but the jackpot as well. So of course, we made him wear the fish hat, and he wore it with pride.


Even thought we lost the Battle, we won their friendship - so much so, that they wore our boas on the way home.

Congratulations to VENTURA COUNTY SPORTFISHING - we tip our rods to you and look forward to going at it again next year !!

Quest for WSB

I responded to a trip I found listed on Sportfishingreport.com going out of Long Beach on Thursday night - huniting the wiley WhiteSea Bass. This boat had had some success over the last couple of weeks. It looked like a nice size boat and was limited to 12 anglers.

I really wanted Biff to get one, and me too of course. As it turned out we did both hook one and unfortuneatly did not land them. Had all the WSB hooked been landed we would have limited for the 10 anglers.

We caught these surf fish called Sargo - like a surf perch - but better eating.

Ultimately 6 WSB were boated from 47 to abut 15 lbs. These were way bigger than anything I had seen before. The one I hooked and fought for 20 - 30 minuetes was a brute. I learned a valuable lesson that can't be explained in advance. When you hook one of these you have to be ready and know what you are doing. I made one small mistake and the beast shook the hook. Simple as that.

I held one up for scale even though I did not land this fish - these were really big. The crew said what they have been seeing are between 30 and 40 lbs. The Captain landed the first one of the day - a 47 pounder and split the fish up with the angler who did not land one. Everyone when home with some great fish. Edgar our CM ended up hooking 3 WSB for the day. He handed off one to another angler and it was taken by a seal. And this small one he hooked late in the day when we were fishing off the beach and gave it to Fiff and I.

I did manage to hook and land after a lengthy battle a 120 lb Black Sea Bass. It turned out to be the second of the day the first being about 150 lbs and taking over an hour to bring in .Both were released unharmed but tired from the fight, as are our arms and shoulders.
I gave my lovely BSB a pat on the head before they un-hooked him/her and set it free.

What a priveledge to battle such a wonderful creature. I had never seen one before let alone 2 in one day.

My Sweetheart took me to Rancho Leonero which is a private paradise on the East Cape in Baja Mexico to celebrate our 2 year anniversary as well as my birthday. This was the best trip of my life...Fishing was excellent and the company was even better. Fred and I had the following awesome fish count for 3 days of fishing:
