GCLA on the Sea Biscuit

We were very excited for this trip with scores of Seabass and Halibut filling the counts as of late.....but weather, as usual, was throwing us a bad hand. We boarded and hunkered down for what was promising to be a rough ride out..... And it was, but I kept thinking...It will be beautiful tomorrow....at least thats what iWindsurf was saying

Woke up to glass conditions and not much current, but the bite started off with a short Seabass and a couple of missed bites so we were hopeful...Fred caught a big log of a slime and Marion hooked a nice 32 pound flatty and that kept us amped up enough to stay there trying for a while. Fred ends up coming through with a decent Seabass on the lead head, that would be our only one for the day.

After a while we got bored with no bites and took off to Bobby's whitefish honey hole. This spot bit and what a blast we had....Huge whitefish ripping drag and tons of hootin' and hollerin' erupted as the girls and a few guests put the wood to a great variety....Ling cod, sheephead, whitey, and even a few big reds ate the squid....

We tryed to go out and fish the deep spots for rockfish, but we gave up on that quick as the seas were just too gnarly out of the lee of the Island. Back inside for a few drifts that did not produce much and we wrapped up a gorgeous day on the water..

Sounds like they killed them today...Freakin seabass....always better the day before or the day after....

Great time and great company made for a great day on the water. Special thanks to Capts Bobby and Matt, Scott and JJ on deck and of course Jonathan in the Galley for taking such great care of us as usual.

getting ready to go fish

Our fist day on the water was a 1/2 day and we left at the liesurly hour of 9 am
Biff and I were on this trip with his cousin Robert of Utah. ( Robert was best man ot our wedding)

Haida carver and me

On the first day the kings were slow so we decided to go and get the rock fish limits out of the way,  our buddy Nils was on board and hooked this nice halibut and handed it to Biff to bring up- turned out to be 125# a new pwesonal best for the Biff!

We were jigging off the bottom mostly for the Yellow Eye, Lings and Halibuts,  I thought this was a nice  Ling about 20#or more.

Then the kings started to bite, there was a lot of pressure on the salmon grounds, so getting our limits was not easy, it was drizzly and cold out and there was an army of commercial trollers out too.

That is why we were smiling so big to get the kings, felt like reall success against the odds
Here are the size hooks used for rock fish with some of the herring used in mooching for the salmon on the table behind my hand

This is the nice stinky salmon guts used for the halibut and rock fish.
This is Robert, Biff's cousin and a 40# Ling Cod

Here is one of the group shots on the dock back at the lodge.  the smaller fish we are holding are silver (coho) salmon.  They bite like firecrackers and jump all over the place.
We fished 3 and 1/2 days in all, each uf us came home with 3 boxes of fish a piece

Mirage 2 Day

2 DAY On The MIRAGE

While all of  the GCLA gals were whooping it up at  Anneye's house.    I was watching the sun go down over Santa Rosa Island.  WE were ending the first day of a 2 day fishing trip on the Mirage,  I say we there were 17 of us plus the crew and Andrew brought his wife - Cynthia to help prepare and serve
meals.
We left on Monday night  and fished  Tuesday morning for the White SeaBass that have been sporadically showing up - but not for us on this day.  So with the weather looking good and the Navy out of the way Captain Tucker took us out to "Jurassic Park"  and we got the nicest ling I have seen since I was there 4 years ago.

After we got our limits on the Lings we went to another spot in the area and pulled up the biggest reds I have ever seen.
This is Daniel , age 12, already a pro fisherman and a veteran of the 2-day plus- and a heck of a nice young man.

Well no good fishing trip is really complete without the Stussman on board.  Jerry managed to break 2 poles on this trip and all the records for the amount of bull *(%# a man can come up with.

Also on this trip was Scott from the VSC and we squared off in preparation for the  competition at the end of the month.  I was trying to put on a stern face but everyone kept busting me up.

So I tried another approach- Andrew handed me the bat and I contemplated knocking our competition out.
Scott is OK - I didn't do it, but I have to say fishing with Scott and  Gary L for 2 days they are pretty good.  I think we just have to rely on the fact that the fish like us better.

Go GCLA !!!!

Hey Ladies, have any of you caught any WSB? I was out on Tuesday, there were 6 on the Gentleman, but none for me. :(

Puerto Vallarta Maximus Style!!!!

Cow Tuna......That's a tuna that weighs over 200 lbs and one of Fred's longtime goals. I never thought I would ever be able to do a trip like this, nor handle a fish that big, but when we got the invite to hop on board the Maximus in Puerto Vallarta we decided to give it a whirl....

We flew over in 2.5 hours and Capt Keith Denette picked us up at the airport. We picked up a few essentials and headed for the boat.

I had just finished wrapping two heavy rods to go with my existing assortment and was so excited to possibly break them in on a fish over 100 lbs!!!!

We rigged up and had a few cocktails then hit the sack. We would be on the grounds in the morning when we awoke.

The scenery was amazing...we saw whales, sharks, puffer fish, and even got paid a few visits by the locals....

So everyone is getting bit and I sit in what they call "kite-jail" I didn't know what they meant until I was sitting there holding the kite rod for 3.5 hours waiting to get bit while everyone else is catching these monster tuna. The kite is when they send up a kite with a snap on it...you run your line through the snap so you can dangle your bait on the surface. The deck hands tell me that my patience will be worth it and finally I see a huge splash as a big tuna boils on my bait. The kite flies away taking my bait with it and I quickly drop it into free-spool. As soon as my bait hits the water again I am on....35 minutes later I am almost in tears as I had a new personal best Yellowfin Tuna...

I end up getting one more smaller fish for the day....If you call 75 pounds small.....and crew filleted it up for fresh tuna steaks for dinner.

Next morning we are up before the sun and I pinned on a squid we caught the night before with a balloon and a sinker rig....As the bait drifts away from the boat I get slammed for my third fish. a gorgeous fish just over 100 lbs....

I end up getting a total of 6 fish for the trip ranging from 75-150 pounds. No scales so we measured the length and girth and used the formula to calculate. No cow for me this trip, but I will get one next time.

I spent a lot of time shooting pictures for Fred as this was his dream trip and I wanted to capture him in his glow.... He ends up with 3 fish for the trip, but he caught the bigger ones.

Here is a shot of one of his beasts coming to color....

Fred connects with his first fish on day one and it comes over the rail at 150.

Next fish of day one feels and looks like a cow, but after we tape out the length and girth he is just under at 190 lbs...Devistated by loss of the "cow" title by 10 pounds, but still ecstatic at his new personal best tuna...

The next day his dreams come true as he connects with this monster he faught for 1.5 hours.....216lbs and officially a cow!!!!!

We had heavy hearts as we ended our trip and the boat pulled away from this amazing place. We slept and woke up back at the dock where we kicked back by the pool, soaked up some sun and had a few cocktails to celebrate the trip of a lifetime....

Check out the marlin tile job in the bottom of the pool!!!

What an amazing adventure....We are already booked again and I am eager to get back out there and achieve cow status of my own.

Special thanks to Capt. Keith and his amazing crew for memories that will last our lifetime!!
