Open Spots on Apollo - 2 day Tuna Trips

Dear Lady Anglers,

Since Biff, Jake & I had our introduction to Tuna fishing I wanted to go again. I asked JJ Geritsen to let me know if any of his charters needed more people. We have sent in deposits for the August trip.

Allen Chariton resopnded:
I've been charting the Apollo for some 30 years. A great boat! Attached is my flyer for this year. Still room on all trips. They're two day trips leaving Tuesday evening returning Thursday evening. Same group I've been fishing with for ever! Reason for the openings is that the guys in construction have fallen on hard times.
Allen

Albacore 101

Hi Ladies!
Sorry we didn't go on the Stardust this weekend. I saw an opening on the Apollo for
Fathers Fay weekend a while back and booked it for Biff, Jake & I . This was a Shimano limited load Tuna trip 1 1/2 days.
Well we left San Diego (Saturday night6/20) w/high hopes, the winds were projected at 10 knots for the outer waters but we knew it was blowing up north. The tuna and yellow tail counts had been spotty as it is still early in the season.
We started trolling about 5:30 am and we trolled and trolled. We went through 1 1/2 or 2 whole rotations before getting a strike and it turned out to be a spanish jack- never even saw it. Then and albie hit- just 1.
We stopped on a couple of kelp patties and managed to hook a few yellow tail- I got my first one on a chrome & blue jig - it was small but gave a good fight- sorry no photo.

As the day wore on we got a few strikes on the troll rods and picked up a few here and there. Along about 3:30 or so we finally got a good solid hit on all 4 troll rods and on baits dropped over the side it was fast and furious for about 30 minutes. Biff & I were on the Troll and got our fish. Jake threw a bait over the side and hooked a nice one on light tackle ( 20lb test) it gave him quite a fight. He finally brought it in and was pretty happy about the experience.
All in all for 17 anglers we caught 18 albacore, 5 yellowtail, 1-bonito, 1-spanish jack.

I had a blast fishing with the girls. The crew was great and very helpful. Happy to return the Jackpot to them for all their great help. Nicely, I was given a free return trip ticket for the 3/4 day. and, with all those boyz on board chumming, what happens, girls beat them out........Way bumpy, and windy out there as you can see from my new spiked hairdo. I am so glad I am on the July 11th battle of the sexes. I can see my team will well stacked . Thanks again girls, it was a rough but great day

Bumpy day on the Stardust

Well we're back from a day out of Santa Barbara on the Stardust. Unfortunately the swells were too big to get out near Santa Rosa Island, and the fishing closer to shore wasn't all that great today. We mostly caught rock fish, with a few very small ling cod (not keepers) caught. One guy did really catch a rock -- maybe 10 pounds or more so it was looking a bit exciting.) I got drenched by waves on deck shortly before we changed directions. Before me was another lady (not a club lady) who took a big hit too. She never did make it out to fish. It was cold and windy for quite a bit of the day. There were a number of seasick fishermen, but no sick GCLA ladies. Babsie turned back at the dock since her son was already feeling sick -- and you made the right decision!! (He would have felt REALLY bad had he gone out.) Chris did win the jackpot though, and as always it was good to be out on the water. This was my first time ocean fishing with my husband Kevin too, so that was a good thing. And he ran into captain Merritt who used to take him out of Santa Barbara regularly on the Seahawk years ago. Merritt was doing ocean/marine biology research instead of taking fishermen out on boats. The Stardust crew worked hard, but it wasn't our day for many fish. (They did tell me that the big white sea bass from earlier in the week was caught in the afternoon on the beach.) Our next time out we hope to catch more fish!

Can you top this?!

Good luck to our STARDUST anglers tomorrow (June 20) -- we have a handful of intrepid GCLAs going out of Santa Barbara's Sea Landing ... and just look at this 42-lb white sea bass the STARDUST picked up earlier this week! Go get 'em girls!!

SeaJay Charter

GCLA kicked bass again today - more WHITE SEABASS !! The weather was gorgeous and we were up early and ready to go. They came, they bit, and they left. A bunch of us hooked up but these four lovely ladies were able to bring them on board.

But KUDOS and CONGRATS go out to Meredith who went from this.........................

TO this...............................................

Her third trip as a Gold Coast Lady Angler was the charm. From seasickness to JACKPOT WINNER !!!! We are very proud of our girl - she hung in there and was crowned our WSB Queen for the day. Right on Meredith - you rocked today !!

After the initial bite ended, we spent the rest of the day picking for some calico's and whitefish. Chris C had a hot stick today as well. She was hooking up one after another. It's always the quiet ones you gotta watch.

We did not get limits, but it was great to spend a fabulous day hanging out with your GCLA buddies.

News from GCLA Sitka

Well today was cold and wet and bumpy.
The fishing was slow by Alaska standards, however our captains still managed to put us on limits of King Salmon and Halibut. Barb helped out with the overall weight by catching a 65 lb halibut on a jig. They measure the halibut in inches and have a chart that tells them what it will weigh - this one is 53 inches. Here is Pat with a nice King she had to reel in twice. He got close to the boat and then dove another 80 feet.

So far we have gotten limits for the group each day of King Salmon-one per day each , Halibut- one per day each and are nearing limits on yellow eye-2 per year. Susan is the only one to catch a keeper Ling, we also have a few black bass.
We ave heard that tomorrow is forecast includes more rain and who knows what else.
The largest halibuts are the 2 @65 lbs, the rest are what they call "chickens".
I will post more pix when I get home when I have a stronger internet connection.
Having a wonderful, exhausting, seasick, bedtime stories, overeating, going gaga over all the eagles- time.

Wow! Gorgeous Alaska ladies. Here's halibut ceviche at our house. Oh, and my new halibut sticker on the van. I guess you can make more of it after your trip up there. Yum yum yum. Halibut on the brain.
